My take
“Makes my Mac screen flicker-free and shifts brightness and colour with the time of day. Less eye strain, zero fiddling.”
NiklasUpdated 20 Oct 2026
Love it
- Dims the screen without PWM, so it stops flickering
- Colour temperature and brightness follow the time of day on their own
- Presets for health, sleep, reading, programming and more
- One-time purchase or a small monthly plan, with a free trial
Fair warning
- The settings window looks dated and has a lot of options
- Warmer screen colours take a day or two to get used to

The longer story
Iris
Iris is a small app that runs in the background and makes your screen easier on the eyes. It adapts colour temperature and brightness to the time of day and dims the display in a way that avoids PWM flicker.
Why I Recommend It
I use Iris on my Mac for two things: a flicker-free display, and brightness and colours that match the time of day. In the evening the screen stops blasting daylight at me. Less eye strain, and I don't have to think about it.
The key insight: Night Shift only changes the colour. Iris also takes care of brightness and flicker.
Key Features
- Brightness control without PWM, the fast on-off pulsing many displays use to dim
- Colour temperature and brightness that change automatically through the day
- Can match the screen brightness to the light around you
- Presets like Health, Sleep, Reading, Programming and Biohacker
- Runs on Mac, Windows and Linux, with a free trial
Who It's For
Anyone who spends long days at a screen and feels it in their eyes by the evening. If Night Shift feels too basic, Iris is the next step.
